Understanding Casino Bonuses and Wagering Requirements

A plain-English guide to the types of bonuses offered by UK licensed casinos and how wagering requirements work.

Why Bonuses Have Terms and Conditions

UK-licensed online casinos often promote welcome offers, free spins and other bonuses to attract new customers. These offers are always subject to terms and conditions (T&Cs). The T&Cs set out who is eligible, how the bonus is credited, and—critically—the wagering requirements that must be met before any winnings from the bonus can be withdrawn. Understanding these terms helps you make informed choices and avoid disappointment.

Types of Bonuses at UK Casinos

Welcome or sign-up bonuses are offered to new customers when they register or make a first qualifying action. They may take the form of a matched bonus (e.g. 100% match on a first deposit up to a cap in GBP), a fixed bonus amount, or free spins on selected slots. The exact structure varies by operator. Always read the T&Cs to see the minimum deposit, maximum bonus, and which games count towards wagering.

Free spins are exactly what the name suggests: a number of spins on a slot game without using your own stake. Winnings from free spins are usually credited as bonus funds and are then subject to wagering requirements. Some operators offer “no wagering” free spins, meaning winnings are paid as real money with no further play-through. These are the exception rather than the rule.

Reload or ongoing promotions are offered to existing customers, often on certain days or for specific games. They too are governed by T&Cs, including wagering and game restrictions.

What Are Wagering Requirements?

Wagering requirements (also called play-through or rollover) are the amount you must bet before bonus funds and any winnings from them can be withdrawn. They are usually expressed as a multiple of the bonus, or of the bonus plus deposit. For example, “35× bonus” means you must wager 35 times the bonus amount. If the bonus is £20, you would need to place £700 in qualifying wagers before the bonus and associated winnings are converted to withdrawable cash.

Not all games contribute equally. Slots often contribute 100%, while table games like blackjack or roulette may contribute a lower percentage (e.g. 10%) or be excluded entirely. The T&Cs will state which games count and at what rate. Some offers also impose a maximum bet per spin or per hand while wagering; exceeding it can void the bonus.

Time Limits and Eligibility

Most bonuses have a time limit. You might have 7, 14 or 30 days to complete the wagering. If you do not meet the requirements within that period, the bonus and any winnings derived from it may be forfeited. Eligibility is usually restricted to one offer per person, household, device or IP address. Using more than one account to claim an offer is against the rules and can result in the closure of accounts and confiscation of winnings.

Comparing Offers Responsibly

When comparing casinos, look at the full picture: the size of the bonus, the wagering multiple, the time allowed, and which games count. A smaller bonus with lower wagering can sometimes be more achievable than a larger one with very high rollover. We do not recommend chasing bonuses; gamble only with money you can afford to lose and treat any bonus as a chance to try more games, not as a way to make money.
